FAQs

Common questions about our counseling services and therapeutic approach

What is the difference between psychotherapy and counselling?

Counselling focuses on providing short-term guidance and support to help you address specific issues or life challenges. While Psychotherapy on the other hand provider deeper and longer-term guidance and support, helping address underlying patterns, emotional difficulties/ dysregulation, and mental health conditions. Both are conducted by trained professionals, but psychotherapy involves more intensive work by exploring past experiences and deeper emotional work to identify root causes and provide lasting change.

What is the key difference between a counsellor, a psychotherapist, a psychologist, and a social worker?

A counsellor holds a master’s degree in counselling and uses talk therapy to help client develop coping strategies and provides short-term support. A psychotherapist and psychologist hold advanced degrees (master’s or doctorate degrees), provide talk therapy, and utilize evidence based therapeutic modalities for long-term support. A psychologist can also provide psychological testing and diagnose. A social worker holds a master’s degree in social work and provides holistic support meaning both mental health advocacy, psychotherapy when clinically licensed, and connection to social services.

How do I know when I need therapy?

You might benefit from therapy if you are experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, mood swings, depression, grief, relationship difficulties or any situation that feels too difficult to manage. Therapy can help you gain perspective, develop coping strategies, and improve your overall emotional well-being. If you are also curious but unsure about needing therapy, you may benefit from increased self-awareness and unlock more of your subconscious to help you understand your reactions.

What can I expect in my first session?

During your first session, your therapist will take time to understand your concerns, discuss your goals, and outline a plan for your therapy. It’s an opportunity to ask questions and get comfortable with the process.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major Credit Cards and e-transfer. All payments are processed securely using advanced encryption technology. We do not directly bill insurance companies. We provide a detailed receipt which you can submit to your insurance provider for a reimbursement or pay out of pocket, save the receipts, and claim them under medical when you file your tax return.

How do I know my insurance will reimburse me?

We recommend calling your insurance provider to ask the following questions: Do I have mental health benefits? What percentage of the feed is reimbursed? Is there a deductible I need to meet first? Are there any limits on the number of sessions I can access per year?

What is your cancellation policy?

Appointments can be canceled or rescheduled with at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations within less than 24 hours may incur a fee, depending on the circumstance. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
